Primary Source: Johannes de Laet

The Dutch geographer Johannes de Laet (1581-1649) served as one of the founders and directors of the Dutch West India Company from its inception in 1620 until his death in 1649. In 1644, he published the Iaerlyck Verhael van de West-Indische Compagnie, an account of the early phases of Dutch occupation from a decidedly Protestant perspective. His text provides information on the slave trade and documents the origins of the enslaved Africans coming from Angola during much of the tenancy of the Dutch. His description of the early years of Dutch involvement in the Atlantic contextualizes the circumstances that brought many of the residents of the Quilombo does Palmares to Brazil.
